My dog passed away several years ago, and I can't stop crying. She was my best friend and I loved her and still love her more than anyone. I never want another dog again because I can never love another dog as much as I loved her, but I long for a pet. My dad says that I need to get over the dog and is putting me under pressure to start having kids. I am in no way judging people who make this decision or putting them down. It's a personal decision. I clarify that it's just not the right way for ME and I would be so unhappy. Does this make me a despicable person? True Alice, most guinea pigs need another pig companion... usually one pig will get lonely. I do feel that if I get a guinea pig then I should get two together. I don't want her lonely. I'm not a child hater, I just don't think I would be a good mother and I don't know how I could handle having a kid and a pet. I think it's ideal for children to grow up with pets, but I don't know how to handle that dynamic. I had two guinea pigs and they were my world. My dad is saying and doing things to upset me, and putting conditions on his love and support. For example, he goes around telling various people that "I'm never going to be a grandfather because my daughter is too lazy to have kids." I'm the only child and I'm under a lot of pressure from both parents but my father makes me feel terrible. I think it would be very unfair to the kid, though, to have a kid just because I caved in to his pressure.

My partner was adopted and trying to understand his position. I'm NOT looking to change his opinion or saying he's wrong, just trying to understand it. He and his twin were adopted as babies in the 60's, neither interested in finding their birth parents - the people who adopted them were abusive so guess my partner had bigger things to worry about. He says his birth parents didn't want him so no reason to find them, they ruled-out contact on the adoption papers so I guess he's right...but in general I'd think many people didn't want to give-up their kids for adoption. He's making a half-arsed attempt to find out about them now, but this is about curiosity over his ancestry and not an interest in meeting them, and he's dragging his feet. As we'll be having children together it'd be nice to know my childs ancestry, but I don't want to push him into finding out more information. I can't quite grasp not wanting to know who your parents were or your ancestry, I'm an only child except for a half-brother I've never met...it drives me crazy not knowing my own kin, so hard for me to understand this.
