I have seen people give look bad at a guy who doesn't work and talk behind his back when he's becomes unemployed, but when a woman is unemployed or "looking for a job" then it's different, why do people think it's more normal for a woman to be unemployed than a man?

I stayed with my sister & my brother in law for a week. They're newly married. He acts odd around me sometimes other times normal. Boyfriend of twenty years got a new job few years ago after getting a cut back in his salary for about $30K. He told me he was going to get a raise in couple years once the company has more resources. Company got now more money (they got the money they were expecting). When I asked him when he would be getting a raise he was promised to, he said nobody is talking about raise for now. Couple days ago I saw his pay stub laying around. He indeed got the raise almost a year ago. I am disappointed on him. What ever reason he had, he lied about it. He is a good guy in general but this is making me wonder what is going on.
