That old rule of thumb of "2-3 months salary" seems a bit unreasonable living in SoCal.

My fiancé and I are getting married in a month. We've done a money only registry through Honeyfund because we've been living together for 2 years and don't really need any items. What we need is money so we can put a down payment on a house that we plan to look for after the wedding. We didn't announce it on the invitation because I didn't want to be tacky, but the online registry very obviously has no gifts and just requests money for assistance with a down payment. I know my family will be fine giving money but my fiancé has pretty much guaranteed me that his family will ignore it and give gifts. While I'm grateful for any gift given to us, we're really counting on the money received from the wedding to make up the bulk of our home downpayment. Did anyone else ask for the same at their wedding? What was the result? Did most people give money or did you end up with a bunch of toasters you didn't need? Thanks!
