I'm 23 and I've never really had female friends. I'm nearly done with college in a few months and I have no clue why I've never had a girl friend. First off, I do have friends, but they're guys. So my mom/dad have a friend who has been around my whole life. I am 24. He actually used to date my mom before my dad came along. Hello! I want to start this off by saying that I'm in my late 20s, I have a good job, I travel a lot, and have a good amount of friends. I'm generally a happy person. On the other hand, my aunt is in her late 50s, single, lives with my other aunt, and doesn't have a whole lot of friends. She is critical of every single thing I do. When I travel, she says stuff like "Well, you know you could die in a place crash." I bought a Lexus recently and she asked me why I thought I was better than everyone else. I went with my mom to look at furniture a few days ago. I really like modern pieces. My aunt compared my taste to "something that belongs in a whorehouse." She is negative and mean about everything I do. I told my mom to stop telling her anything about my personal life as the examples above are her normal reaction and it's none of her business. I live two hours from my hometown and visit once a month, sometimes twice. I know it shouldn't seem like a big deal because I only see her a few times a month, but it is so draining and has such a negative impact on me. She's always there. If my mom and I do something together, she has to come. November 10th, 2007 in Charleston county sc, my mother was in a car accident and passed away. There was this woman who sat with her while she spoke her last words and took her last breath. At the time I was very young and did not get many of the details about what happened, including this women s name and what was said during this time. It has been so bad his whole life that, if he does something that hurts my feelings and I mention it, he beats himself up. Badly. It is never anything really bad either, just things every now and again I call him out on. And I do things too. We all screw up in relationships every now and again. We all make mistakes, but he's a very good man. Treats me really well. And I make sure to tell him that a lot! He never feels like he does enough for me either. Even though I tell him constantly that he goes above and beyond! I asked him why he puts such unreasonably high standards on himself. Well, apparently this was how he grew up. Being constantly put down by his dad. Nothing he ever did was good enough. He'd get blamed for things that were not even his fault. His mom would stick up for him, but she's not innocent herself either. She is judgmental of others including her own son. Recently he had to give up a cat he adopted because there were some issues. His mom has made him feel like absolute crap over it. He was already upset he had to do it, he didn't need her making him feel like trash because of it, but she did. This past Christmas his mom cried on the phone to him and made him feel awful about him not being there, even though we spend two Thanksgivings with his family. It was my turn. And the guilt she made him feel, he was hardly able to enjoy himself all day. I don't know how else to help him other than always telling him how loved he is just by bein himself. And when I say judgmental. After only a week of knowing his mom she went on and on about how awful a certain religion is (I won't say what because it bothers me she even talked like that in front of someone she barely knew.) But it put me off rather quickly with her. She still tells my boyfriend how he should feel or think about something, even if it differs from her. It's almost like she doesn't want him to think for himself. I guess I didn't make my question clear. I just want to know how to help him. I tell him he needs to stop worrying about what they think. I never want to come between him and his family, but I am trying to help him understand that he needs to separate himself from them a little. The more they see him, and know details about his life, the more room it gives them to push.
