Question: Who is responsible for paying for a wedding? Posted: 15 Jun 2018 12:18 PM PDT I understand that it has always been the tradition for the brides family to cover the cost of the wedding. But, it has also always been the tradition for a man to pay on dates, hold the door, etc. Very few young men are chivalrous in this way. Oftentimes, women are expected to pay for their portion of the meal when on dates. Personally, I have paid my half for every date past the very first few. That being said, times have certainly changed, however, I was wondering if expecting the brides family to pay for the wedding is an outdated tradition? I really hate to be cheap in this situation, however, weddings are always very costly (average $40,000) and I come from a family of 6 girls. My parents simply cannot afford it even if we get a great deal and pay half of the average price. I am also worried that the grooms family will be somewhat judgmental if we decide to go the less expensive route and spend what is in our price range. Many of them have not met my family or myself and I don't want to come across as tacky. Yet, I am unsure of whether or not they would be more upset if they found out that my side of the family wasn't able to pick up the entire tab. Would it be terrible to split the cost of the wedding with the grooms family? |
