Our relationship was always tumultuous and toxic, but he's been in my son's life since he was 2 and has been his father-figure and dad. He's rightfully earned that title and something I didn't force. He also has a young teen daughter and beyond our relationship being a mess, he's always been good to my son despite talking poorly of me in front of both kids. My ex was adament that he wanted to continue being in my son's life and to be his dad, but since we've moved out of my exes home about a month ago the communication is scattered. It seems like any relationship will be on my exes terms. When my son texts him he basically just answers to respond, but nothing to in depth. In my mind, a child at 11-years-old shouldn't bear the sole responsibility to have a relationship with a parent. It's a parent's job to make sure their child is involved and even though my ex and I aren't speaking, I never once said he couldn't be in his life. I encouraged it. I just never imagined that only after 1 month it would have dwindled down to little to no communication unless my son initiates it. He and I live within blocks of each other and when we left, he told me my son could come 'home' whenever he wanted and he would make sure he has a key. That hasn't happened.
